Media on Demand
The ultimate goal of the Media-On-Demand (MOD) project is to build a multi-component system that will capture and store different formats of media and be able to deliver them throughout a home or building to different outputs or display devices. The motivation is to build a system that can be incorporated into The Home Depot Smart Home at Duke and then will showcase the potential of home entertainment.
It functions by storing all of the data digitally on a main server which then streams the selected data to remote terminals or set-top-boxes. The set-top-boxes then decode the signal and display it on a television or display. The system is scalable and can consist of one computer storing and playing the media, or alternatively, a large network consisting of numerous servers and many output terminals. The system can also be upgraded to support the leading industry standards for entertainment which includes full MPEG-4 encoding, 1280i HDTV resolution, and 6.1 surround sound.
